Joey Logano is building confidence, and with that he is more hard on himself.

On eve of 19th birthday, Logano better with age

CONCORD, N.C. -- While signing autographs at Home Depot along side Joey Logano, fellow driver Matt Kenseth leaned over and asked, "Now what year were your born again?"

The 18-year-old replied, "1990."

Kenseth sighed. The 37-year-old Cup Series veteran lamented that he has a son close to Logano's age, who was born in 1993.

But seemingly 18, soon to be 19, is a reasonable age for a Cup driver like Logano who has been racing since he was barely 6-years-old. And now that he is making some progress on the track after what looked to be a rocky start to the season, Logano is ready to break some 'age-old' records.

The more competitive I get, the more I want to win. I like being competitive, I like being up here and it takes that little bit more when you're up here to beat these guys. They're that good, so you can never be satisfied.

-- JOEY LOGANO

After his birthday on Sunday, the Joe Gibbs Racing rookie who took control of the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing machine this season, has a little more than one more year to beat Kyle Busch's record of the youngest driver to win a Cup Series race.

Busch won his first Cup race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif., in September 2005 at 20 years and 125 days.

To date, Logano's career-best finish is a ninth-place finish at Talladega Superspeedway followed by a repeat finish at Darlington Raceway. Adding to his recent accomplishments, the Connecticut native was voted into last week's All-Star Race at Lowe's Motor Speedway and finished eighth.

"Momentum is starting to kick in for sure," said Logano, signing autographs for hundreds of fans in line at the Home Depot in Cornelius, N.C., on Friday. "You know we had a rough start and that pretty much puts you in a hole. And now I think, even a couple races before Darlington, we were starting to get better. We kept improving and the confidence level with me and the team keeps improving and it is shows in our finishes and how we run."

Now he is running well enough to be frustrated when he doesn't meet his own expectations.

"Yeah, I'd rather be this way than the other way, believe me because not too long ago I'd be happy with that qualifying effort [Thursday]. Now I'm pretty mad about it. At least I can say that I'm getting to my normal ways," he laughed. "I used to get mad at myself all the time so that's a good thing, believe it or not."

The anger serves as fuel for the developing Cup star.

"The more competitive I get, the more I want to win. I like being competitive, I like being up here and it takes that little bit more when you're up here to beat these guys," he said. "They're that good, so you can never be satisfied."

Logano will start Sunday's Coca-Cola 600 14th on the grid. His best qualifying effort came this season at Darlington where he started in the fifth position.

"I just felt like I gave it up," he said. "I feel like I was the one that screwed that one up. Oh well, you'll have that. I felt like I just dropped it into [Turn] 1 way too soon and I killed the rest of the corner. It is what it is. We have a good car, a better car than that, so that makes me feel a little better. Nothing we can do about it now so we'll just put that in the past, learn from it and see if we can get a better car for Saturday and we'll work on it even more on Sunday."
