FORT WORTH, Texas -- Texas Motor Speedway president Eddie Gossage has been diagnosed with cancer and has been undergoing treatment in recent months.

The disclosure came Wednesday in a statement issued by Speedway spokesman Mike Zizzo.

Gossage has been president of Texas Motor Speedway since its opening in 1997. Zizzo says doctors diagnosed Gossage with cancer last fall and began treatment around the Samsung 500 in April and the Bombardier Learjet 550K race in June.

Zizzo says "the most intense treatments have been over the past month and they have proven to be a success."

Gossage is known as a Texas showman. Stunts have included pre-race motorcycle jumps by Robbie Knievel, an all-female pit crew at a Truck Series race and a 42-foot fire-breathing, car-eating robot.
