Proving he's not just another Guy around the Sprint Cup garage, the crew chief for the No. 12 Dodge driven by Brad Keselowski of Penske Racing took a few minutes recently to discuss many topics.
Among them: something Jay Guy is certain he can beat good friend Chad Knaus at virtually every time, even when giving Knaus a generous head start; his high-school buddy who has made it big on the PGA Tour; and his future plans for four-month-old daughter Ansley.

Q: How well did you know Keselowski prior to getting paired up with him at Penske Racing?
Guy: I'm just getting to know Brad right now. I've known Steve [Addington] and Travis [Geisler] from before, so I had a pretty good relationship with the other [Penske] crew chiefs right off the bat. I've been around Brad for years and watched him come into this sport, through the Nationwide Series and the [Camping World] Trucks. Just watching him, I could see that he had a lot of talent and I always thought in the back of my mind that, man, it would be great to work with him some day. Now I'm fortunate enough to get that opportunity.
Q: Keselowski seems to revel a little in his rabble-rousing image. How do you look at that?
Guy: I don't really pay too much attention to that stuff -- because when he straps in our car, he gets in there and gives it his all and he's 100 percent focused on that. I don't really see that other side of him, except for what I read in the newspapers and on the Internet and stuff. When he straps in that Penske Dodge, he's 100 percent focused on trying to make it go fast.
Q: Don't you need some of the sort of edge he has to be a great driver?
Guy: You definitely have to be able to have confidence to be successful in any competitive sport, and especially in NASCAR. And Brad has the 'it' factor. I look forward to being successful with him on and off the race track.
Q: Speaking of being off the race track, we understand one of your passions is golf. What's your handicap?
Guy: A lot. I enjoy playing golf with my friends. It's a chance to get away from the race track a little bit and catch up with your friends that maybe aren't in racing and have jobs outside of the sport.
Q: So you are not going to reveal what you shoot?
Guy: It all depends on the day. I could shoot anywhere from 150 to 85. I always like to be on the 85 side of things, but as long as you're out in the outdoors doing it and having fun with it, it's a good time.
Q: You probably don't get to play much this time of year, do you?
Guy: I may get to play a little bit after work on a Wednesday night or something like that when there might be just a little bit of time after the truck's loaded. I belong to the club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, and it's a great little country club. Unfortunately, I eat dinner there a whole lot more often than I play golf there. But it's always fun to go and see the guys, and it's a great course. I look forward to sneaking in six or seven holes at night some weeks, and maybe a full round during the off week. (Continued)
