Shell/Pennzoil is switching from Richard Childress Racing to Kurt Busch's car. Miller Lite is moving to the vehicle of Brad Keselowski. Mobil 1 is ending its tenure as a primary car sponsor.
In regards to Penske Racing, those moves leave one unanswered question -- what happens to the No. 77 car of Sam Hornish Jr.?
Hornish's No. 77 car was the odd vehicle out in Wednesday's sponsorship shuffle that promises to revamp the look of the Penske stable in 2011. But a team executive said that the company still intends to field a third Sprint Cup entry next season, and with Hornish behind the wheel.
"We are planning on running a third car with Sam Hornish," said Jonathan Gibson, Penske's vice president for marketing and communications. "We are committed to 2011 with Sam, to find some partners for 2011 to compete with a third team. Sam has made a lot of progress over the last three years, and has obviously had some good runs this year. Our plan is to run three cars in 2011."
A former IndyCar champion and Indianapolis 500 winner, Hornish has posted four top-20 results this season with a best finish of 13th at Martinsville. He has started third and second, respectively, over the last two weeks, and stands 29th in series points. Mobil 1, his car sponsor since he switched to NASCAR prior to the 2008 season, has announced it will discontinue its relationship with Penske after this season.
The organization wasted no time in realigning its sponsor makeup, snatching another petroleum company, Shell/Pennzoil, from Kevin Harvick's car at RCR. Gibson said the effort to craft a sponsorship package for Hornish's No. 77 car is underway.
"We've got a lot of great partners already, and our intention is to find some additional partners," he said. "We'll be prepared to announce those in the next few months. ... We definitely have a plan to run three cars."
