In 1911, the most prestigious auto race in the world, the Indianapolis 500, was run for the first time. In 1994, stock cars raced on the renowned Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the first time. Every driver dreams of winning at Indy, for the glory and the bragging rights the win carries. At Indy, it is all about history, and every fan has Indy on their to-do list for that reason.
Getting there
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is located on the west side of Indianapolis, just minutes from Indianapolis International Airport.
From the North: Take 1-465 South and exit east onto 38th St. Turn south (right) onto Moller Road. Then go east (left) on to 30th St. Turn south (right) on to Georgetown Road and IMS will be on your left.
From the South: Take I-465 North and exit east onto Crawfordsville Rd. (exit 16A). Follow Crawfordsville Rd. east on to 16thSt. The track will be on your left.
From the East: Take I-70 West and exit north onto Holt Rd. Turn west (left) onto 16th St. IMS will be on you right.
From the West: Take I-70 East and exit north onto I-465 North. Exit east onto Crawfordsville Rd. (exit 16A). Follow Crawfordsville Rd. east to 16th St. The track will be on your left.
If you are coming up or down on I-65, exit on 30th St. westbound.
What to bring
Indianapolis Motor Speedway allows personal coolers no larger than 14" on any side to be carried into the grounds. No glass containers are allowed. Patrons may also bring in small backpacks and/or carry a bag in for food and personal items. All coolers, bags, backpacks and purses are subject to search at the gate.
Parking and camping
Speedway Parking: Parking for passenger cars and recreational vehicles is available at seven locations adjacent to the speedway. In addition, tent camping is available in Lots 1-A, 1-B, Lot 2, Lot 3 and Lot 4.
Speedway Camping: Tailgating is permitted in the daily parking areas of the following lots: Lot 7 (North 40), Inside Turn 3, Inside Turn 1, Lot 1B, Lot 1C, Lot 2, Lot 3 Grass
Private Camping and Parking: There are many private camping and parking lots near the speedway. They are on West 10th St., Polco St., Luett Ave. and the 4000 block of W 22nd St. On Georgetown Rd. are business such as the Coca-Cola plant and the American Legion that allow camping and parking for race fans.
