Joey Logano confirms he's engaged on Twitter
Announcement draws reactions from fellow NASCAR drivers

HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- It's been a big Champion's Week for Joey Logano even if he isn't mathematically contending for the Sprint Cup title this season.

He earned his seventh top-five start of the year in Friday night qualifying -- his No. 22 Hertz Ford will roll off third for the Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

And on Tuesday -- which held the rare date 11/12/13 --  the 23-year old Penske Racing driver asked his longtime girlfriend Brittany to marry him in an elaborately planned proposal.

"I'm happy to say I came up with that all by myself, somewhere in here is a romantic person, I don't even know where that came from,'' Logano said still grinning Friday as he told the story on Homestead's pit road.

As he tells it, he had long wanted to buy his fiancée a new car, "so I had to upgrade to her a Ford and she loves Thunderbirds. They don't make them anymore so I had to find a mint green Thunderbird.

"I lit up a couple trees in front of my house with Christmas lights and pulled in with her and it was sitting there,'' Logano recalled.

"It's kind of a low car, so when she was sitting inside it, I got down on one knee outside it. And she turned around and there I was.

"I had picked out the ring and it was just too hard for me to wait. Why wait?"

Logano and Brittany have known each other for years. At one point they worked together at a hockey rink. Logano drove the Zamboni and she worked in the concession stand.

"She’s a great girl,'' Logano said. "I’ve been dating her for a long time and she’s really actually my first kiss and the first girl I ever went out with, so that’s kind of cool to have that relationship for a long time and figured I’d go for it.”

The reaction from his NASCAR brethren was amusing. Brad Keselowski, his Penske Racing teammate, claimed he thought it was a hoax. And DeLana Harvick, wife of Kevin Harvick, responded as well. For context -- following a wreck with Kevin Harvick at Pocono in 2010, Logano quipped that DeLana "wore the fire suit in the family."
