Nationwide drivers give Chicagoland the scoop on Dash 4 Cash

NASCAR Nationwide Series points leader Regan Smith and fellow series competitor and 11-time X Games gold medalist Travis Pastrana weren’t on a mission from God on Monday.

But like the Blues Brothers, they rolled through the streets of Chicago in a sweet ride for a good cause.

Piloting an ice cream truck from State & Lake to Millennium Park street to Michigan Ave. & Illinois before meeting with fans at Bub City, Pastrana and Smith served up frozen confections all the way.

Smith sold $2 more worth of ice cream sandwiches to Pastrana’s bomb pops. With over 500 transactions at a suggested $1 donation, they raised over $600. Chicagoland Speedway’s R.A.C.E. Foundation, a donor advised fund of the NASCAR Foundation, made an additional donation to bring the total charitable contribution to $2,000.

The friendly competition benefitted the Charlie Dean Leffler Discretionary Trust, established in the wake of NASCAR driver Jason Leffler’s death last week. The trust serves as the official fund for Jason’s five-year-old son, Charlie, and provide for his future needs.

“This was my first trip to downtown Chicago, and we had a great time out here while raising money for a cause near and dear to our hearts,” said Smith.

“I’ve spent a lot of time in Chicago over the years and it’s always one of my favorite places to be,” said Pastrana, who is in his first full season in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. “Regan edged me out there at the end today, although I still think he might have taken some liberties with self-funding. We enjoyed getting to meet everyone and we’re excited to be back here two more times this season.”

The pair was in town to promote the July 21 NASCAR Nationwide Series STP 300 at Chicagoland Speedway, located in Joliet Jake’s hometown. The race is the third of four events in the Dash 4 Cash. If one driver wins in Chicago after taking the first two races, he has a shot at $1 million if he or she wins the following weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Fans can get in on the action by entering the NASCAR Nationwide Series $100,000 Sweepstakes at www.nascar.com/Dash4Cash.

Last Saturday, Smith won the Alliance Truck Parts 250 at Michigan International Speedway for his second victory of the 2013 campaign while Pastrana finished 17th.

The Nationwide Series stays in the Midwest this weekend and Pastrana, Smith and their rivals head to Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis. for the Johnsonville Sausage 200 Presented by Menards on Saturday at  5 p.m. ET on ESPN, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
