Wallace, on four new tires, ran out of time before he could catch Gordon, the polesitter. Gordon and Evernham went on to win three Cup championships together. With 87 Cup victories, Gordon is third all-time and trying to earn more.

18: The number of cars running at the end if the inaugural Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway -- out of a starting field of 60 on June 19, 1960. Joe Lee Johnson won the first event at Charlotte in what is now the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, as attrition and disqualifications took care of most of the field. Both Lee Petty and Richard Petty were among six drivers disqualified for cutting through the infield grass to get to pit road. The starting field of 60 drivers is a record for NASCAR’s longest race.

It happened in the 2011 Coca-Cola 600, the only time a green-white-checkered-flag finish has forced NASCAR’s longest race to overtime. The two extra laps at the 1.5-mile track proved the undoing of Dale Earnhardt Jr., who ran out of fuel in the last corner during the final two-lap dash. The beneficiary was Kevin Harvick, who crossed the finish line .703 seconds ahead of runner-up David Ragan.
