Bob Temple, an Ohio native, began his racing career in 1986 with Roush Racing as an electronics technician. In November 1991, Temple was hired by Mazda Motorsports where he worked as an electronic technical on the Mazda RX-792P in the IMSA series.
The end of the 1996 season brought on a change that led Temple into the world of NASCAR. He made the move with Robby Gordon to Team SABCO to assist with the team's Indy Car program in preparation for the 1997 Indy 500. Temple continued working for Team SABCO but moved to the research and development department for the team's Cup operation. He more specifically served as the shock specialist for the No. 42 BellSouth Chevrolet driven by Joe Nemechek.
In 2000, Temple was chosen to lead the new SABCO Busch Series team. With Sterling Marlin behind the wheel, Temple earned his first victory as a crew chief in the Busch Series event at Bristol Motor Speedway in March of 2000. He continued to serve as crew chief in 2001 under the new ownership of Highline Performance Group.
Temple again worked with Robby Gordon in the Busch Series before Gordon's team made the move to Nextel Cup.
