Kevin Hamlin joined the No. 31 team midway through the 2002 season. Before that he called the shots for Childress' No. 29 team with Kevin Harvick. Harvick won the 2001 Rookie of the Year title with Hamlin as his pit boss.
Hamlin takes a low-key but focused approach to his business and has had an increasing amount of success since he and Larry McReynolds swapped roles within Richard Childress' organization in June of 1998. Hamlin became the crew chief for Dale Earnhardt and McReynolds for Mike Skinner.
