By age 12, Lance McGrew was already helping his father, Les, with his dirt track racing efforts. The younger McGrew quickly slid into the driver's seat, racing at the track around his Baton Rouge, La., home by the age of 18.

Not even a break to study Mechanical Engineering at Louisiana State University could slow McGrew as he was more determined than ever to make a career out of racing.

McGrew moved to North Carolina in the early 1990s and joined the Staff America Busch Series team driven by his future Hendrick Motorsports teammate, Jack Sprague. It was a humble beginning. McGrew started at the bottom doing basic tasks such as sweeping the floors and washing the team transporter.

By 1999, he joined forces with Jeff Gordon and Ray Evernham. A year later, McGrew had taken the crew chief reigns at Hendrick Motorsports for both Gordon's and Ricky Hendrick's Busch Series teams.

McGrew has previously worked with Brian Vickers in the Busch Series.
