Pat Tryson's father, Joe, was an engine builder in drag racing. Following his graduation from West Chester University in Pennsylvania with a B.A. in Business Administration, the younger Tryson went to work for Kenny Bernstein as the car chief/mechanic on his top fuel dragster.

Tryson has worked for various Roush Racing teams in the past, including a successful run as Kevin Lepageŭs crew chief in 1999 and 2000, when he helped lead Lepage to two top-fives, five top-10ŭs and a Bud pole.

In addition, he has served as crew chief for both Todd Bodine at ISM Motorsports (1998) and Geoffrey Bodine at Mattei Motorsports (1997).

Tryson joined the No. 6 team in 2003 after spending the three previous years at Wood Brothers Racing. There, he served as the crew chief for the No. 21 car and drivers Ricky Rudd and Elliott Sadler.
