The start of the 2003 Winston Cup Season marks the beginning of Steven Lane's second full year as a crew chief at Petty Enterprises.
After taking over as crew chief on the No. 45 car late in the 2001 season, he has been an instrumental part of returning Petty Enterprises and Kyle Petty back into the competitive ranks of NASCAR. Petty finished a disappointing 43rd place finish in the 2001 championship standings. In Lane's first full season as crew chief he guided the team to a 22nd place finish in 2002.
Lane, 32, grew up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Watching drivers like Harry Gant, Bobby Allison, and Darrell Waltrip, Lane wanted to become part of the fast life. In 1997 he broke into the NASCAR Winston Cup Series working in the prestigious scale-model program for Penske-Kranefuss Racing.
