| A California native, Calvin (Cal) Wells III grew up with a passion for motorsports. From an early age, Wells volunteered and worked at off-road shops before building his own off-road truck at the age of 15.
Wells also raced competitively in his late teens until a non-racing car accident (Wells was a passenger) sidelined his chances of pursuing a driving career full-time. It was at this point that Wells began pursuing a lifelong business career in motorsports.
In 1979, Wells founded Precision Preparation, Inc., (PPI) in Westminster, Calif., an off-road racing company that grew to fill two facilities on both coasts with competitive programs in Cup, Busch, CART, Toyota Atlantic and off-road venues. Building and fielding successful motorsports programs has been, and continues to be, Wells' only business interest.
In 2001 with less than two seasons in NASCAR, Wells got his first Cup series win in Ricky Craven's October victory in Martinsville. In 2002, the team finished 16th in owner points a big jump from 2001, when the team finished 26th. Changes in manufacturers and a new crew chief are sure to make the 2003 season an interesting one for Wells and his PPI Motorsports team.
