2004: Jerry Oliver, who started nine Cup races in the 1960s and '70s, died on this day at age 59. Oliver, of Concord, Calif., made all nine of his starts in his home state at Riverside, starting at least one race each year from 1966 to 1972. His best finish was in June 1971 in the Winston Golden State 400, when he finished fifth, eight laps behind winner Bobby Allison. Oliver had one other top 10, a ninth-place finish in January 1970 in the Motor Trend 500. He finished 17 laps behind winner A.J. Foyt. (Born Jan. 18, 1944.)
