1995: Jerry Kemp, who made his only Cup start in the inaugural Southern 500 in 1950, died on this day. Kemp started 34th in the field of 75 cars at Darlington Raceway and finished 49th. Driving a 1950 Lincoln, Kemp completed 315 of the 400 laps.
