Today in History: March 21

March 21, 2011, Sporting News Wire Service, NASCAR.com

1971: Forty years ago, Richard Petty leads 161 of 276 laps en route to winning the Hickory 276 at .363-mile Hickory (N.C.) Speedway. This race is a good example of how much NASCAR has changed through the years. The field was 22 cars, and 12 finished. Today, the shortest track is .526 miles (Martinsville), and the shortest points races are well more than the 100 miles of this day's race.
