1959: Despite starting 24th in a 40-car field, Lee Petty leads a career-best 337 laps en route to winning the Virginia 500 at Martinsville. Johnny Beauchamp finishes second and Junior Johnson third, both five laps back. This is the only race in Petty's career in which records exist that show him leading more than 200 laps. In Petty's 427-race Cup career, he started 11 500-lap races, seven at Martinsville.
