1956: Bobby Johns makes his NASCAR debut in the Arclite 100 at Columbia (S.C.) Speedway. Johns finishes 23rd in the 26-car field, his day ending with a crash 40 laps into the 200-lap race at the half-mile dirt track. Speedy Thompson gets the win by more than two laps over Buck Baker. Johns makes 141 Cup starts over 14 seasons, winning twice. He also makes two starts in the Indy 500, finishing seventh in 1965 and 10th in 1969.
