1956: Nineteen cars start a 200-lap race at Southern States Fairgrounds, a half-mile dirt track in Charlotte, but only four are running at the end. Speedy Thompson leads 174 laps, including the final 173 and finishes five laps ahead of Curtis Turner and Lee Petty. The fourth car running at the finish is 10th-place Richard Riley, who completes 141 laps.
