1956: Curtis Turner survives a field of 70 cars to win the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway by more than two laps over Speedy Thompson. Marvin Panch finishes third. Turner leads 225 of 364 laps, and 39 cars are running at the finish. It is the third-largest field for the Southern 500.
