1956: Two-time Cup champion Herb Thomas posts the final top-five of his Cup career, finishing fifth at Newport (Tenn.) Speedway, a half-mile dirt track. Fireball Roberts wins the 200-lap race, and Buck Baker is the only other driver to finish on the lead lap. Bill Amick is third, one lap down. Thomas finishes four laps behind Roberts. Thomas finishes his Cup career in 1962 with 122 top fives -- 48 wins -- in 228 starts.
