AVONDALE, Ariz. -- Ricky Carmichael and his wife escaped injury Friday night when their car was hit by a flying tire as a result of a driver going the wrong way on the freeway.

Carmichael was heading for dinner -- driving on State Highway 85 in Buckeye around 6 p.m. local time -- when the multi-car accident occurred.

"I was driving to go eat dinner when two cars in front of me swerved," Carmichael said Saturday before Nationwide Series qualifying. "Then the actual car in front of me got sideswiped. When he did, it blew his left front [tire] off -- and the tire was floating in the air like a torpedo. I was trying to get out of the way of the truck and the tire just hit our car."

The tire slammed into the hood of Carmichael's car, doing serious damage to the front end. But all inside were safe. More than 12 hours later, Carmichael was still trying to get his emotions in check.

"It's probably the scaredest I've ever been for my life, to be honest with you," Carmichael said. "I had my wife with me and a friend. It's something I don't ever want to experience again.

"If the truck was eight inches more to the left, it would have been a different turnout, for sure. I definitely cheated something really bad there. Really, I don't even like to think about it."
