Dave Mitchell, vice president for Rick Ware Racing, died unexpectedly at his home in Thomasville, N.C., on Nov. 29. He was 44.

Mitchell also handled the team's marketing and public relations, and acted as a spotter and mentor for Timmy Hill, who won 2011 Nationwide Series rookie of the year honors.

"I lost a dear friend, someone [with whom] I spent the majority of my time planning, traveling, racing and dreaming of the next adventure," Ware wrote on the team's Facebook page. "He was all the things that made RWR great. He was my partner in crime, dreaming of the next big thing. He let me think outside the box then helped me build the box."

Mitchell's career in racing marketing began when he designed and developed a website for driver Ryan Newman. After handling public relations for developmental drivers in the Midwest, Mitchell was hired by MacDonald Motorsports to help them transition from part-time to full-time status in the Nationwide Series.

In 2009, Mitchell joined Rick Ware Racing. In addition to the team's NASCAR efforts, RWR is also involved in arenacross, motocross, regional touring series and ARCA. The team made its initial foray into Grand-Am sports cars in 2011.

Mitchell is survived by his wife Danielle and two children.
