CONCORD, N.C. -- Following arrest on DUI charge, driver benched indefinitely by RAB Racing team
John Wes Townley was temporarily removed Friday from RAB Racing with Brack Maggard's No. 09 Toyota following a DUI arrest Tuesday morning in his native Georgia. A RAB Racing spokesperson said the team still planned to make its Camping World Truck Series debut on Friday, Feb. 24, but "was in no hurry to settle on who to put behind the wheel. We'll do our due diligence before making that decision." "Obviously, this is an unfortunate situation," team owner Robby Benton said Friday in a statement. "However, we have to react to the severity of the incident accordingly. His actions do not reflect those of RAB Racing, nor the sponsors associated with the team. "John Wes has accepted full responsibility, and will take the necessary personal steps in order to correct his actions, among other internal sanctions. We stand by John Wes, and will welcome him back to the team at the appropriate time." According to the Oconee County Sheriff's Department Facebook page, Townley, 22, was involved in a traffic accident and then was detained after police "at approximately 4:30 a.m. ... received a call in reference to someone knocking on the door of a residence in the Mallard Lakes subdivision. Upon arrival, deputies found John Wesley Townley outside of the residence. "After questioning him and conducting a further investigation, Mr. Townley was arrested for DUI and failure to maintain lane in connection to vehicle crash nearby. The case is still pending, and no additional charges are expected to be filed." Townley, who has 47 career starts in the Nationwide (38), Truck (seven) and K&N Pro East (two) series, has not driven in NASCAR since 2010 and hasn't been in the Truck Series since 2008. In 2008-2009, Townley made 23 ARCA Racing Series starts for RAB, with a best finish of fourth, at Talladega. In 2009 he made a single start for Venturini Motorsports, with a career-best finish of third. In seven Truck Series starts for Roush Fenway Racing in 2008, Townley had a best finish of 18th but an average finish of 24.7 after crashing out of races three times.
