1956: Buck Baker starts from the pole position and rallies to win the Virginia 500 by half a lap at Martinsville Speedway. Speedy Thompson led 259 laps and finished second in a 1-2 finish by Carl Kiekhaefer-owned Dodges. Lee Petty was third, three laps off the pace. Baker, who led 125 of the 500 laps in his 19th Cup win, drove a car numbered 502, which remains the highest number to win a race in the history of NASCAR's premier series.
