Today in History: November 15

November 15, 2012, NASCAR Wire Service,

1980: Benny Parsons wins the Los Angeles Times 500, but Dale Earnhardt wins the season-long battle, finishing fifth to clinch his first championship in NASCAR's premier series in the final race at Ontario (Calif.) Motor Speedway. Neil Bonnett finished second with pole-starter Cale Yarborough third. Yarborough, in his final drive in Junior Johnson's No. 11, wound up just 19 points behind Earnhardt in the season standings. The Ontario track, a state-of-the-art 2.5-mile replica of Indianapolis Motor Speedway, fell into financial ruin not long after the season-ending event. The site is now a commercial area.
