NATIONWIDE SERIES PRACTICE 1 | RESULTS

Rookie points leader Chase Elliott vaulted to the top of the leaderboard Thursday afternoon in opening NASCAR Nationwide Series practice at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Elliott, driving the No. 9 Chevrolet for JR Motorsports, turned a fast lap of 123.324 mph, which ran a few minutes past its allotted time in the original schedule. The rookie logged the most track time by far, running 106 laps to top the next-highest tally -- 89 laps by Dakoda Armstrong.

Elliott's speed eclipsed that of Kyle Busch, who turned a lap at 122.898 mph in the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 54 Toyota. Busch rides a streak of three straight Bristol wins in the Nationwide Series heading into Friday night's Food City 300 (7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN).

Kevin Harvick and Brian Scott tied for the third-best speed in a pair of Chevrolets. Harvick ran 122.178 mph in the No. 5 JRM Camaro and Scott clocked an identical speed in the Richard Childress Racing No. 2. Ryan Blaney completed the top five in the Team Penske No. 22 Ford.

Elliott carries a 10-point lead over JR Motorsports teammate Regan Smith in the series standings. Elliott Sadler ranks 16 points back in third place. Smith was seventh-best in first practice with Sadler 15th-best.

Milka Duno, bidding to become the first Hispanic woman to compete in a NASCAR national series race, was 41st-fastest of the 43 drivers to participate in opening practice, more than 1.2 seconds off Elliott's time. Only 40 cars will make the field for Friday night's 300-lap race, the 23rd of 33 events in the 2014 season.
