NASCAR driver stats, preview information for 2014 season
Jamie McMurray returned to Victory Lane in 2013 in October’s Camping World RV Sales 500 at Talladega Superspeedway. The victory erased a 108-race winless drought stretching back to Charlotte Motor Speedway in 2010 – McMurray’s best season in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. McMurray moved up six spots from his 2012 ranking to finish 15th in the championship standings. It is very possible that McMurray could be a first-time contender in the 2014 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. The No. 1 Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates Chevrolet team will have a new crew chief, Keith Rodden, formerly an engineer on Kasey Kahne’s No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports team. He’ll be joined in 2014 by new teammate and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender Kyle Larson, who takes over the No. 42 Chevrolet following the departure of Juan Pablo Montoya.
The 2010 season will forever stand out for the Joplin, Mo., native, who won the Daytona 500, Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s Brickyard 400 and capped the season with a victory in Charlotte Motor Speedway’s Bank of America 500. This year will be McMurray’s fifth season with Chip Ganassi Racing. He previously drove for Roush Fenway Racing from 2006 through 2009. His .005-second victory over Kyle Busch in the July race at Daytona International Speedway is the closest margin of victory at the track since the introduction of electronic timing. McMurray burst on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series scene in 2002 winning in only his second race driving for Chip Ganassi Racing as a substitute for the injured Sterling Marlin. He remained there through the 2005 season.
McMurray, a world karting champion, drove late model stock cars in his home state of Missouri before making his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut in 1999 for the St. Louis-based Mittler Brothers Ford team. He has a single victory in the series as well as eight wins in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.
