I have been involved in racing since I was a kid. I spent most weekends of my life at a race track of some sort. I started racing motorcycles when I was 5.

My parents got divorced, and I needed to help out around the house. I started working. I became a delivery driver.

I got a scholarship to the University of South Florida in Tampa. I always liked math -- people always told me I should be an engineer. So, I went to USF for mechanical engineering.

I realized quickly that the best way to influence setups was to have an engineering degree. So, I applied to go back to UNC Charlotte.

Fortunately, my wife was willing to work. I did odds and ends when I could. I changed oil at a shop in Denver, North Carolina

They were looking for someone -- they only had six or seven engineers. Unfortunately, they shut down at the end of the year.

I was helping David Reutimann start an ARCA team for Wayne Reutimann in a corner of the Michael Waltrip Racing NASCAR Sprint Cup Series shop. They had some personnel changes at MWR and a buddy called and told me. So, I printed my resume and walked it upstairs.

I had wanted to be a crew chief but my philosophy has always been to come in, work hard, do whatever they ask. I was happy just to contribute.
