JTG Daugherty co-owner among former players to receive check

MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- Before Brad Daugherty gravitated toward NASCAR and TV broadcasting as second careers, he had more than a cup of coffee in the NBA, playing eight seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers. But before that, he learned lessons in life and basketball wearing the Carolina blue uniform in college for Coach Dean Smith. Smith died Feb. 7 at age 83 after a Hall of Fame career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His legend grew again Thursday, when word trickled out that Smith had willed a $200 gift to each letterman who played for him during his 36 seasons with the Tar Heels. Shortly after the crash, Earnhardt described why and how he procured the vehicles. "David Gilliland and Justin Allgaier got in an accident on the front straightaway, and I called both those guys up and their race teams and asked them if they were doing anything with those cars," Earnhardt Jr. said in May of 2014.
