Washington Redskins fan Earnhardt tweets to get his team's QB in Richmond mix
Dale Earnhardt Jr., NASCAR's Most Popular driver for 11 straight years and counting, clearly has a pretty good hold on NASCAR Nation. With Saturday night's race at Richmond International Raceway, a quick two-hour drive from FedEx Field, home of his beloved Washington Redskins, the Hendrick Motorsports driver used his pull to bring in Pro Bowl quarterback Robert Griffin III to be the honorary pace car driver in the Toyota Owners 400 Sprint Cup Series race.
And it all started with a tweet.
Earnhardt Jr. (@DaleJr) tweeted last month to Richmond International Raceway (@RIRInsider), suggesting that the track should invite Griffin (@RGIII) to be the race's Grand Marshal and offer up the most famous words in motorsports: "Drivers, start your engines." Richmond's president, Dennis Bickmeier (@RIRprez) one-upped him, offering the prestigious pace car duties to Griffin instead.
Griffin will join thousands of fans who align with the Redskins and NASCAR, just a short trip south of Washington, D.C. Before Griffin leads the field of 43 NASCAR drivers to the green flag, he'll go through pace car training, spend some time with his pal Dale Jr., and get together with legendary former Washington Redskins coach and NASCAR team owner Joe Gibbs for a garage tour.
