BRISTOL, Tenn. -- The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge made its way to NASCAR over the past week with drivers such as Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jimmie Johnson, Danica Patrick and Ryan Newman among several taking up the cause to raise money for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis awareness.
On Friday at Bristol Motor Speedway, it reached the top of the industry.
NASCAR President Mike Helton sat on a stool in front of the sanctioning body's hauler, surrounded by five drivers who all giddily held buckets full of ice water. Noting that every driver who doused him had pledged to donate to the ALS Association, Helton steeled himself and gritted his teeth as Patrick, Earnhardt, Johnson, Greg Biffle and Jamie McMurray doused him.
Once it was over, the drivers laughed as if they had gotten away with something while Helton swept water off his body and emptied ice cubes from his shirt pocket.
"That was all for a good cause and a good reason, and I'm thankful for their participation," Helton said. "This goes to show that we work hard, but we play hard, too."
McMurray initiated Friday evening's events, tweeting that Helton agreed to his challenge in return for McMurray donating $1,000 to the ALSA. The Ice Bucket Challenge rules are normally: When challenged, you can dump ice water over your head and donate $10 to the charity, or skip the ice bath and donate $100 to the charity.
The other four drivers each matched that $1,000 pledge for the pleasure of soaking the president.
"I'm a little nervous I'm going to have a speeding penalty on pit road or something tomorrow," Johnson said with a chuckle.
True to the level of grandeur that belies his title of president, Helton took the challenge head-on. Whereas some drivers were drenched while wearing fire suits and others had changed into gym clothes, Helton wore his usual slacks, buttoned-down shirt and sports coat.
"It was a lot of fun," Johnson said. "I didn't know what he was going to do or wear, and he went full attire. He definitely manned up on that end big time."
