BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Already with a top-five at Bristol in the spring, Aric Almirola unloaded Friday at Thunder Valley with a quick car that placed him sixth in first practice and fourth in the final practice. Then qualifying came, where Almirola … uh … stumbled over his own foot?
That wasn't quite the analogy the driver used on Twitter after getting into the wall and smashing his No. 43 Ford, but it's close enough. What he really said was … well, just see his tweet below.
That's what you call stepping on your wiener. My guys brought me the best car I've ever had at Bristol and I crashed it.— Aric Almirola (@aric_almirola) August 22, 2014
Yes, the driver who is sponsored by Nathan's Famous, a company in primary sponsor Smithfield Foods family, went there.
He ended up not recording a lap because the team needed to take his car behind the wall to try and repair, so he will start 42nd based on owner points (Casey Mears also did not make an attempt). They eventually brought out the backup No. 43 car.
Almirola would give a more G-rated interview after the incident.
"I screwed up and that's all there is to it," he said. "We have probably the best race car I've ever had at Bristol and I screwed up and hit the fence."
