Following his third win of the season and his sweep at Pocono Raceway, Dale Earnhardt Jr. tweeted a text that he received from his mother, saying she reminded him of his father.
On SiriusXM NASCAR Radio this week, Earnhardt Jr. explained his mom's role in his racing life and why he shared that text with his fans.
"… it's not something that she would throw around loosely and not something that she would say often," Earnhardt Jr. said. "It definitely made an impression on me when she texted me that.
"She's always been talking to me about what's going on with me and my racing, and she has her opinions. I've told her on several occasions that I just need her to be a mom because sometimes she gets really strong about what she thinks is going on with me on the race track."
Earnhardt Jr. noted that his mother has a vested interest in his Nationwide Series team because she works at JR Motorsports. But he responded like most sons would respond to their mothers.
" 'Mom, I just need you to be a mother,' " Earnhardt Jr. told his mom. "I'm out here on Saturday and Friday, trying to get my car fast. Maybe things aren't going the way I want them to, and I just need a mom.'"
The universal nature of the mother-son exchange struck Earnhardt Jr. as something he should share with his fans on Twitter.
"So when she texted me that, I thought that was one of the coolest things she's ever said," Earnhardt Jr. "So it dawned on me that maybe I could share that and people might get that same impression and kind of get an understanding and a little insight of what mom's like so I thought that was pretty cool."
