Aussie fans razz Allmendinger under red flag at Watkins Glen

During the final red flag of the afternoon in the Cheez-It 355, AJ Allmendinger wasn't sure whether he was on a World Cup pitch or a road course. But the reaction he received put the "international" in Watkins Glen International.

"I got to sit there and listen to "'AJ sucks! Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi! Oi! Oi!'"

--Marcos Ambrose

Allmendinger was sitting side-by-side with Australian Marcos Ambrose before the last restart of the race, and he said on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio that fans from Down Under turned on him.

"…we literally stopped next to the tower that was all Aussie fans so I got to sit there and listen to "AJ sucks! Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi! Oi! Oi!" the whole time under red for like 25 minutes or however long the red flag was," Allmendinger said. "It actually made me chuckle because Ambrose and I were parked next to each other. I looked over at him and saw his hand going, trying to get the crowd into it.

"Then like a soccer match broke out when it came to chanting. USA was on one side. Australia was on the other so in that time, it just made me kind of laugh and chuckle and actually stay a little bit more calm because it was pretty funny to sit there and listen to how much I sucked from the Aussie fans."

After holding off Ambrose, Allmendinger put shrimp on the barbie by lighting up his tires for the fans in that section.

"I'm not going to lie, I might have done a burnout in front of them after I did my victory lap around the race track," Allmendinger said. "But it was fun. It's what makes the Sprint Cup Series so fun is the passion, no matter who the driver that the fans are excited about or them getting into it."

The first-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series winner saluted all of the fans who stuck through two delays to see him go to Victory Lane and clinch a berth in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.

"It was a huge crowd (Sunday)," Allmendinger said. "They had to sit through a lot with all the repairs and red flags so thanks to all the fans for sticking it through. But it was a lot of fun, a lot of passion there. It was a good time."
