8: The number of drivers who beat Greg Biffle’s previous track record during Thursday’s qualifying session at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Denny Hamlin was fastest of all and will start Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 from the top spot after streaking around the 1.5-mile track in 27.604 seconds (195.624 mph), shattering Biffle’s mark of 193.708 mph set last October. In addition to Hamlin, Kurt Busch, Matt Kenseth, Mark Martin, Clint Bowyer, Kasey Kahne, Biffle and Kyle Busch all broke the 2012 record. Thursday’s time trials marked the seventh time a track record has fallen in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series this year.

227: The fewest number of laps ever run in a Coca-Cola 600. On May 25, 2009, driver David Reutimann and crew chief Rodney Childers gambled that rain would halt the 600 and opted to stay out under caution while other lead-lap cars came to pit road. It was the right call. After a long delay and extensive track-drying efforts, NASCAR called the race at 227 laps, giving Reutimann his first Sprint Cup Series victory and Childers his first win as a Cup crew chief. At 39, Reutimann became the oldest first-time winner since Lake Speed picked up his only Cup victory in 1988 at age 40.

16: The number of laps led by Jeff Gordon in the 1994 Coca-Cola 600, the race that gave Gordon his first victory in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series. Rusty Wallace led 187 laps in the May 29 race, but Ray Evernham made a two-tire call in the late going that gave Gordon the lead. Wallace, on four new tires, ran out of time before he could catch Gordon, the polesitter. Gordon and Evernham went on to win three Cup championships together. With 87 Cup victories, Gordon is third all-time and trying to earn more.
