Today's NASCAR Number is 18
18: The number of cars running at the end if the inaugural Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway -- out of a starting field of 60 on June 19, 1960. Joe Lee Johnson won the first event at Charlotte in what is now the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, as attrition and disqualifications took care of most of the field. Both Lee Petty and Richard Petty were among six drivers disqualified for cutting through the infield grass to get to pit road. The starting field of 60 drivers is a record for NASCAR’s longest race.
