Kahne has knee surgery, will be OK for Richmond

Kasey Kahne had minor surgery on his right knee Monday to repair a torn meniscus and will not need a backup driver next weekend for the Sprint Cup race at Richmond International Raceway.

Kahne had surgery on both knees in the offseason to repair a condition known as "plica syndrome," the result of a buildup of tissue in the knees.

Kahne tweeted about the surgery Thursday night and said he feels fine.

"It actually just about feels better now then it has the last month so yeah I will def be driving Richmond," his tweet said.

A team spokesman confirmed the surgery and said there are no plans for Kahne to have a backup driver standing by at Richmond. It was unclear when Kahne, who has been involved in two hard accidents in the past three weeks, tore his meniscus.

Kahne is 18th in the standings, 51 points out of 10th with 18 races left before the Chase field is determined. The top 10 drivers make the Chase with two additional spots going to the drivers 11th-20th with the most victories. Kahne, who has three top-10 finishes, is winless this year.
