Before 1991, Harry Gant was known throughout the NASCAR Cup Series garage area as "Handsome Harry." In 1991, he earned the nickname "Mr. September" for winning four consecutive NASCAR Cup Series races that month (Darlington Raceway, Richmond International Raceway, Dover Downs and Martinsville Speedway), tying the modern era (1972-present) record. He also won two NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division races during that time.

The 1991 season was Gant's most successful, finishing a career-high fourth in the NASCAR Cup Series standings, winning five races, one pole position, tallying 15 top-five and 17 top-10 finishes as well as leading the field in laps led with 1,684.

In 1995, Gant was inducted into Lowe's Motor Speedway's Court of Legends.
