CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The heart and soul of NASCAR nation has stood tall and risen to the occasion in providing relief to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The Official NASCAR Members Club and its more than 600 Local Chapters has banded together to lend assistance to the hundreds of thousands of Americans whose property and homes have been devastated by the recent storm of the century that ravaged the Gulf Coast last week.

Once the news began circulating on just how serious the damage from the hurricane was, the leadership of the ONMC, most notably the Presidents of the Local Chapters, immediately mobilized the organization and a chain reaction of collective efforts occurred. Ed Martin, National Director of the Local Chapters of the ONMC, initiated the lines of communication with the Chapter Presidents and the results have been overwhelming.

"The Local Chapters have been awesome in organizing relief efforts in their hometowns and communities," said Martin. "Through NASCAR, we provided our members with some basic direction regarding the alliance with the American Red Cross, and they took it upon themselves to reach out and work in lockstep towards providing assistance in every way they possibly could. To witness what has happened over the past week or so has been nothing short of amazing."

Martin developed a hurricane relief link on the ONMC web site discussion forum. There have been hundreds of posts. Here is a sampling of just how passionate the ONMC has been in assisting with the relief efforts:

  • Paul Mullens, President of the Charleston, W.V. Chapter, helped organize a fundraiser with the West Virginia Radio Corporation on Aug. 31. The chapter set up its ONMC tent and received donations from NASCAR memorabilia they had collected. The end result saw more than $130,000 raised for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts and the Charleston Local Chapter was at the forefront of the project throughout the day.
  • In Savage, Md., Chapter President Dale Klonin organized a fund-raiser during his group's watch party at a local restaurant last Sunday evening.
  • Cindy Roe of Auburn, Ala., has organized a golf tournament for the third week of October that will raise funds for the relief efforts.
  • Jay Legendra and the Mt. Vernon, Maine Chapter collected canned goods, donations and non-perishable items for the relief efforts.
  • The Splendora, Texas Local Chapter, located 30 minutes north of Houston, collected food and clothing and delivered the items to the Astrodome, which was being utilized as a rescue shelter. Shelley Keck, Chapter President, helped spearhead the efforts.
  • The North Texas Chapter, under the leadership of Libby Templeton, held a watch party and fundraiser over the weekend for hurricane relief efforts and will hold another watch party fundraiser this Saturday at a hotel adjacent to the Texas Motor Speedway.
