 | Press Release September 2, 2005 10:19 PM EDT (02:19 GMT)
Tony Stewart will be donating his earnings from Sunday's Sony HD 500 Nextel Cup Series race to the American Red Cross, and his race team -- Joe Gibbs Racing -- will match whatever that amount is. In addition, the uniform Tony Stewart wears in the Sony HD 500 will be signed and auctioned off on eBay, with the proceeds also going to the American Red Cross. After contacting several relief organizations, it became clear to Joe Gibbs Racing that the major needs were cash contributions and the use of aircraft to shuttle key personnel and supplies to the affected areas. Although crews and airplanes were already dispatched to California Speedway, JGR was able to coordinate the use of its 19 passenger G-1 for several key rescue efforts. On Thursday, the JGR plane took a team of doctors equipped with medical equipment to Baton Rouge, La., along with many cases of bottled water and Powerade. Later this weekend, JGR will coordinate a team from Franklin Graham's Samaritan's Purse as they deploy to Mobile, Ala. JGR has committed its aircraft for an ongoing effort with Samaritan's Purse in shuttling key personnel in and out of the disaster area. Additionally, JGR is accepting donations to both the Red Cross and Samaritan's Purse on their website, www.joegibbsracing.com as well as at each of its souvenir trailers at the remaining races. JGR has challenged its employees to make donations, all of which will be matched by the company. Many of JGR's sponsors are working together to activate significant relief efforts, details of which are still to come. What The Home Depot has been doing in the wake of Hurricane Katrina: The Home Depot has mobilized over 1,000 Team Depot volunteers from seven states to aid in the rebuilding and relief efforts (200 from the Texas cities of Houston and Dallas), (300 from Atlanta and the Florida cities of Orlando and Jacksonville), (500+ from the Texas cities of San Antonio, Austin and Houston; the Florida cities of Miami and Tampa; the Tennessee cities of Nashville and Memphis; along with other Southeastern cities -- Oklahoma City, Charlotte, N.C., Columbia, S.C., and Birmingham, Ala.). The company has made a direct donation of $1.5 million to support long-term rebuilding efforts in the affected communities: - $600,000 to support long-term rebuilding efforts in the affected communities.
- $500,000 to nonprofit organizations that produce and rehabilitate affordable housing for low- to moderate-income homeowners to assist with the repair and rebuilding efforts.
- $400,000 to emergency management organizations, including The Salvation Army, for immediate disaster relief and recovery.
Supplies have been staged to the north and on both sides of the impacted Gulf States region. In addition, The Home Depot and the Home Depot Foundation will be working with its suppliers to donate additional materials, such as tarps, flashlights and bottled water, to emergency management organizations. The company has identified six sites to stage temporary support centers to provide communities with additional reconstruction and disaster recovery materials. The Home Depot will direct customers and associates to make financial contributions to the American Red Cross and Salvation Army relief efforts through its web site (www.homedepot.com). In the coming weeks and months, The Home Depot will transport and house thousands of associates to the Gulf States region to provide additional support to stores and communities affected by the hurricane. | |
