Overview

After each race, NASCAR scoring officials at the track file a report sheet to Points and Membership. Once those are meticulously double-checked for accuracy, NASCAR releases the official standings, including total winnings. Drivers are awarded points based on their finish, plus any bonus points for leading races. A driver is eliminated when the maximum number of points he can accumulate by race 26 is less than either what it would require to get into the top 10 or stay within 400 points of the leader. A driver can clinch when the minimum number of points he can accumulate by race 26 is still greater than either what it would require to remain in the top 10 or stay within 400 points of the leader. All projected scenarios for "clinch" and "elimination" assume a driver will start all remaining races.
