NASCAR Number: 6

April 25, 2013, Reid Spencer, NASCAR Wire Service,

6: The number of positions in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver standings lost by Matt Kenseth as a result of a 50-point penalty levied by the sanctioning body on Wednesday. Kenseth fell from eighth to 14th in points. During post-race inspection at its R&D center in Concord, N.C., NASCAR discovered at least one connecting rod that didn’t’ meet minimum weight requirements. NASCAR has a history of treating infractions involving engine components severely, and the 50-point penalty to Kenseth is the largest levied against a driver since the introduction of a new scoring system in 2011. Kenseth’s penalty (matched by a 50-point assessment against car owner Joe Gibbs) is roughly equivalent to the 200-point penalty Carl Long received in 2009 for an engine violation.
