1963: Richard Petty leads 325 of 400 laps and wins the South Boston 400 by more than two laps over Jim Paschal. Ned Jarrett is third, six laps down at the three-eighths-mile oval in South Boston, Va. It is the second time in Petty's career he leads 300 laps in a race. All told, he will lead at least 300 laps in 34 races. His record is 491 in the 500-lap Delaware 500 at Dover in September 1974.
