1961: In his ninth try, Junior Johnson gets his first victory at Martinsville, winning the Virginia 500 by four laps over Emanuel Zervakis and Fireball Roberts. Tommy Irwin and Buck Baker are fourth and fifth, respectively, nine laps back. Rex White, who finishes ninth, leads the first 34 laps, and Fred Lorenzen (11th) the next 334 before Johnson grabs the lead on Lap 366 and never gives it up. Johnson finishes his career with two wins at Martinsville in 19 starts.
