1996: Rusty Wallace holds off Dale Earnhardt by 1.192 seconds to win the NASCAR Suzuka Thunder Special exhibition race, marking the first time the stock-car association had competed in Japan. Wallace started from the pole and led 84 of the 100 laps on the 1.394-mile Suzuka Circuitland road course. Jeff Gordon finished third, followed by Terry Labonte and Wally Dallenbach Jr.
