AVONDALE, Ariz. -- NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points leader Jimmie Johnson began his weekend on a positive note Friday at Phoenix International Raceway, leading the series' single practice session for the day on the 1-mile track.

The Hendrick Motorsports driver posted a fast lap of 138.921 mph to end the nearly two-hour session atop the scoring pylon.
Juan Pablo Montoya (Earnhardt Ganassi Racing) was second at 138.900 mph; Kyle Busch (Joe Gibbs Racing), Kurt Busch (Furniture Row Racing) and Joey Logano (Penske Racing) completed the top five.
Matt Kenseth, who trails Johnson by seven points in the NASCAR Chase for the Sprint Cup with two races remaining, was sixth. Kevin Harvick, third in points, was 19th.
Johnson, who met with the media prior to practice, said he was looking forward to getting back behind the wheel.
"Eager to get on the track and see where we are, see how our car is handling and excited to be at the race track," he said. "When you're sitting there Monday through Thursday thinking about a race, thinking about how your setups are going to be, those are the hardest days.
"I'm excited to be here at the race track and get out there and turn some laps."
Qualifying for Sunday's Advocare 500 is scheduled for 5:40 p.m. ET today on Fox Sports 2.
