NASCAR fan chooses new 2014 Camry over Camry AJ Allmendinger used at Homestead

Before his NASCAR Fan Appreciation Day appearance scheduled later in the day, Sprint Cup Series driver AJ Allmendinger made a quick pit stop Saturday up in New Jersey to drop off his No. 47 Scott Products Toyota Camry -- last seen in the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway -- to NASCAR fan Bob Wilson Jr.

That was the plan, at least.

Wilson Jr., of Hammonton, N.J. recently won the "Win My Car Sweepstakes" presented by Scott Brand, Scott Racing and JTG Daugherty Racing from a drawing of over 250,000 entrants in which he was awarded the tough decision of choosing between Allmendinger's race-used Camry to own and cherish as a garage gem for all of eternity -- or a brand new, street-legal 2014 Toyota Camry.

"He ended up choosing the new 2014 Toyota Camry, to the dismay of his wife and daughter, who actually wanted the race car. He went practical, I guess," Allmendinger told by telephone Saturday morning. "Right before he made the decision, his daughter, she had to be about 16 or 17 or 18 , was sitting in the driver's seat, looking at her dad like 'I want this instead'... He went in with the intention of definitely choosing the Camry, then we ragged on him a little bit and his daughter and wife being there and sitting in the race car, I think he was on the verge of maybe changing his mind but I guess it goes with that whole either being practical or just having something really cool in your garage that nobody else will have. He went practical."

While it might have been a slight disappointment that Wilson chose to go the sensible route -- which, hey, the guy has a teenage daughter, so it's hard to blame him -- it was still a proud experience for Allmendinger, who is preparing for his first full season with JTG.

"The coolest thing was -- it wasn't just a car we had stuffed in the corner of the shop that had been sitting there for a couple of years, it was the car I actually race with at Homestead," he said. "The promotion was ran throughout the year, even before I got to the race team. We ran a few races with the "Win My Car" sweepstakes on the top of the hood from Scott brand and between then and Scott Products, just putting that promotion on and the race team, I thought it was pretty cool because I've been a part of a lot of promotions as well with the race teams that I've been on but I've never been part of a promotion where (a contestant) actually had a shot to win the race car."

Allmendinger will appear at the NASCAR Hall of Fame for NASCAR Fan Appreciation Day on Saturday during Session 7 from 4-5 p.m. alongside Dylan Kwasniewski and Ben Kennedy.
