The NASCAR Cup Series and ARCA Menards Series East have both run at Thompson, but one of the track's main attractions has been the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, hosting nearly 150 races for the series since the inaugural season in 1985.

In the early days of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, Thompson would be featured on the calendar as many as five times. NASCAR Hall of Famer Richie Evans formally kickstarted this tradition by winning the first four races at the track in 1985, with George Kent Jr. being the one preventing him from obtaining a clean sweep.
